ASHES relates events and experiences taken from the lives of three individual families: Polish, Jewish and German.
The narrative begins in the period between the two World Wars and ends in the present. The historical events of this period are portrayed either in direct relation to the effect they have on the lives of the protagonists, or as purely independent scenes. The birth of Facism, - the sudden wave of antisemitic action in Poland and Europe, in general -, the war - the mass annihilation in the concentration camps - and the paradoxes of most recent times act more as a historical backdrop to the events which occur within the lives of the individual families, events which can, on a personal level, be considered to be just as dramatic as the enormous historical upheavals taking place.
It is a piece about human dignity, about the value of human life, and it is precisely this value which is most easily and most readily abused.
/…/ The play, created bilingually is acted with the disturbing intensity of Babel. It's the unaffected sober, presentation which fascinates the audience.
